Though the Alhambra Tower resembles a lighthouse, it is only a facade disguising a utilitarian water tank. Spanish and Mediterranean design elements turned this building into a novelty at the time of its completion in 1924. Now, sitting amidst a myriad structures sharing similar design elements, the Alhambra Tower has faded into the quaint backdrop of Coral Gables. However, the tower itself is as interesting and beautiful as ever while the passerby has grown jaded and unable to appreciate this landmark. This image was created by arranging nine separate photos of the tower into a grid of three-by-three. The result is an illusion of looking at the tower as if through a fish bowl. In the context of this image, the technique attempts to remind the viewer that there are infinite ways of “seeing,” ways that can rekindle our interest in the familiar.
